Who we are
Amakura:
A School for Regenerative Living
Amakura is a regenerative agriculture and bioconstruction school dedicated to sharing the ancient wisdom of the land.
Our mission is to weave together education, culture, and community, offering transformative experiences that empower individuals to reconnect with the earth and rediscover sustainable ways of living.
Founded in Santa María Tonameca, Oaxaca – a region rich in cultural history and natural beauty – Amakura draws on the wisdom of ancestral practices to teach regenerative farming, sustainable construction, and holistic land stewardship.
We believe that by returning to our roots, we can create a more harmonious future with our planet.
Our Story
A Journey Back To Our Roots
Amakura was born from a vision of rescuing ancestral knowledge and reconnecting people to the land.
The name "Amakura" is derived from the spirit of transformation and renewal found in nature – a reflection of our commitment to regenerate the earth and preserve ancient practices for future generations.
Located in the town of Santa María Tonameca, Oaxaca, Amakura draws inspiration from the region’s indigenous roots, where the land and its people have long lived in harmony with nature.
Our founders, passionate about sustainability and regeneration, recognized the need to create a space where people could learn the forgotten practices of regenerative agriculture and bioconstruction. By combining these techniques with the rich cultural heritage of the area, Amakura was born.
In a world that often feels disconnected from nature, Amakura is a place where people can return to the earth, honor the past, and forge a new path forward.
Amakura’s vision is to be a Demonstration Center and Collective Educational Space, where sustainable living practices are not only taught but also experienced and shared within the community. The integration of both regenerative agriculture and bioconstruction as the core pillars ensures that Amakura is a place for comprehensive, hands-on learning, designed to inspire real-world change.
Amakura’s Core Pillars
Regenerative Agriculture & Bioconstruction
At Amakura, we are guided by two fundamental principles that shape our mission and educational programs:
Regenerative Agriculture
Our first core pillar focuses on teaching sustainable, nature-based farming practices. Regenerative agriculture aims to restore soil health, increase biodiversity, and create resilient ecosystems. By using methods that work in harmony with nature, we can heal the earth and create sustainable food systems.
Key topics in our regenerative agriculture workshops include:
Soil regeneration and composting techniques
Permaculture design and integrated farming systems
Water management and eco-friendly irrigation practices
Agroforestry and biodiversity restoration
These practices not only nourish the earth but also contribute to local food sovereignty, helping communities become more self-sufficient and resilient to climate change.
Bioconstruction
Our second core pillar focuses on bioconstruction, which uses natural, locally sourced materials to build homes and structures that are sustainable, energy-efficient, and in harmony with the environment. By embracing ancient construction techniques and combining them with modern sustainability practices, we aim to create homes that are both beautiful and eco-friendly.
In our bioconstruction workshops, we explore:
Cob, adobe, and earth-bag construction methods
Green building techniques, including natural insulation and natural plasters
Solar energy systems and rainwater harvesting
Creating homes that are both off-grid and self-sufficient
Through these practices, we not only reduce our carbon footprint but also create spaces that are healthier and more connected to the natural world.
Amakura serves as both a learning center and demonstration space, where these techniques can be seen in action and applied to both small-scale and large-scale projects. We believe that through education and collective action, we can create more sustainable, regenerative communities.
